Gary L. Krause Sept. 5, 1960 - May 5, 2018

Gary Lee “Hank” Krause, 57, passed away Saturday, May 5, at his home near Deweese. Mass of Christian Burial was conducted at 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 9, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sutton with Father Michael Zimmer officiating. Interment followed at Union Cemetery, 2244 Rd 3300 near Deweese. Casual attire - “come as you are” - per Hank’s request. Visitation was Tuesday, from 1-8 p.m., at Sutton Memorial Chapel in Sutton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family to be designated at a later date. Condolences may be left at www.suttonmemorial.com.  Gary “Hank” Krause was born Sept. 5, 1960, in Hebron; to Lolan and Jean (Erthum) Krause. He received his education at Sutton Public School. On March 15, 1980, he married Connie Ebert. Two daughters and a son were born to them; Jason Lee, Jami Sue and Jenny Lyn. He served a number of years on the Sutton Volunteer Fire Department.

Michael K. Eastin Feb. 2, 1953 - April 30, 2018

Clay Center resident Michael “Mike” K. Eastin, 65, passed away Monday, April 30, at Bryan Medical Center West in Lincoln. Gathering of friends and family will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday, May 10, at Clay Center Senior Center, 118 S. Alexander Ave., Clay Center, lunch will be served. In honoring his wish for cremation there is no viewing or visitation. DeWitt Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Hastings is handling arrangements. Eastin was born Feb. 2, 1953, in Ogallala; the son, of Clifton and Betty (Colson) Eastin. He graduated from Clay Center High School with the class of 1971. Mike received his undergraduate from Colorado Mesa University in 1986 and masters from the University of Nebraska Lincoln in 1988. He married Laurie Westing on June 21, 1975, in Clay Center.

Jane M. Taylor Aug. 17, 1918 - April 30, 2018

Clay Center resident Jane Marie Taylor, 99, passed away Monday, April 30, at the Harvard Rest Haven in Harvard. Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 4, at the United Church of Christ in Clay Center with Rev. Kathryn Bates officiating. Interment followed at the Clay Center Cemetery. Visitation was Thursday, from 1–8 p.m., with the family present from 5–8 p.m., at McLaughlin Funeral Chapel in Clay Center. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family to be designated later. Condolences may be left at www.mclaughlinchapel.com.  Jane was the second child born to William E. and Constante H. (McCune) Herndon on Aug. 17, 1918, at Baker City, OR. At the age of 3, they moved to Toledo, WA; and a year later to Saline County, where her father took over the Herndon family farm. This is where she grew up.

Etta J. Janzen Dec. 10, 1929 - April 20, 2018

Etta Jean Janzen, 88, of Henderson, died on Friday, April 20, in Henderson. Etta Jean was born in Sutton, at home on Dec. 10, 1929, to Elmer and Eva (Stites) Plettner, the fifth of six children. She received her education at Sutton Public Schools, graduating in 1947. She was baptized upon her profession of faith in Jesus Christ during high school. Etta Jean married Henry Janzen of Henderson on Dec. 14, 1950, at her parents’ home in Sutton. She was employed at various jobs throughout the years. Her first job was working for her father at the Cream Station in Sutton. Other jobs before marriage included serving at the soda fountain at the Sutton Pharmacy and Dan’s Café as a waitress. After marriage Etta Jean helped her husband, Henry, with farming. Many jobs during and after farming, included working at the egg hatchery in York, cooking at the Henderson Hospital, working as a bank teller and book keeper at Henderson State Bank, and lastly as a book keeper at Midwest Irrigation.

Leona M. Heyen April 9, 1929 - April 15, 2018

Harvard resident, Leona M. Heyen, 89, passed away, Sunday, April 15, at Mary Lanning Memorial HealthCare, Hastings. Services will be Saturday, April 21, at 11 a.m., at the Harvard United Church of Christ, Harvard, with Pastor Dave Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Harvard Cemetery, Harvard. Visitation will be Friday, April 20, from 4-7 p.m., with family present at Harvard United Church of Christ, Harvard, Apfel Funeral Home; Harvard is in care of the family. Condolences may be sent to www.apfelfuneralhome.com.  Memorials may be given to Harvard Rest Haven or Harvard Volunteer Rescue Squad. Leona was born April 9, 1929, to Grover Cleveland and Bertha (Kuck) Culp in Fairbury. She graduated from Fairbury High School then attended college. She married Ernest F. Heyen on July 30, 1950. Ernie passed away, Sept. 7, 1992.

Annette L. Carpenter July 15, 1928 - April 7, 2018

Sutton resident Annette Lillian (Johnson) Carpenter, 89, passed away Saturday, April 7, at the Sutton Community Home in Sutton. Memorial services were conducted at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 21, at the Clay Center Christian Church in Clay Center with Pastor Kevin Whitmore officiating. Luncheon gathering to follow at the church with friends and family. Inurnment will follow the luncheon at the Sutton Cemetery in Sutton at 4:30 p.m. Book signing with the family present on Friday, April 20, from 5-8 p.m., at Sutton Memorial Chapel in Sutton. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family to be designated later. Condolences may be left at www.suttonmemorial.com. Annette was born in Clay County on July 15, 1928, to Wesley and Myrtle (Swanson) Johnson. She and her brother Charles grew up on a farmstead in the Saronville area and both graduated from Sutton High School. Annette worked for Hastings National Bank in Hastings after graduation.

Robert Charles Oates June 27, 1938 - April 4, 2018

Robert Charles “Bob” Oates, a resident of Webb, AL, passed away April 4, in a Dothan hospital at the age of 79. Memorial services were held on Monday, April 9, in Headland. AL. Interment will be at the Sutton Cemetery with graveside services Saturday, April 14, at 11 a.m. Bob’s family will greet friends and relatives following the service at the Sutton Legion Club. Bob was born in Fillmore County, son of the late Orville Oates and Hazel Elofson Oates. He graduated from Sutton High School in 1956. He then served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1956 until 1959. He lived in Albion, before moving to Webb, AL, in 1982. Bob retired from Whiterock Construction Company as a Construction Superintendent. He and his wife formerly owned and operated Webb Nursery.
