Students at South Central Unified returned to school after the Christmas break with a new set-up for their classrooms. The recently-opened addition to Sandy Creek campus was fully experienced by students on their first day back for the new year, offering open classroom styles, much like those found in a college setting.

Harvard earned a huge win over Red Cloud Jan. 4, taking the 40-point win, before falling to Kenesaw, 63-28, Jan. 5, leaving the team at 6-3 on the season.

Harvard’s gymnasium was filled with the sounds of intense pounding throughout the first quarter, as the Cardinals and Warriors consistently fought for the ball, resulting in several turnovers and pushing the boys in a constant run up and down the court.

Despite Red Cloud’s urgency to grab and sink the ball, the Cardinals used runs of 10-0 and 20-6 in the first half to secure their strong lead. Adding to Harvard’s handle of the ball were 30 rebounds; rebound leaders were Noah Okraska with eight, and David Reazola and Steve Brand with five each.

Going into the second half, Harvard’s advancement in points showed, as the team posted 15 points in the third, compared to Red Cloud’s five.

The Nebraska School Activities Association has announced the 2018 Nebraska Chiropractic Physicians Association Academic All-State awards for this past fall activities season.

Five Harvard student-athletes have been named for seven honors, including, Celina Chrisman and Elizabeth Fields in girls cross country, Noah and Ben Okraska in football and Fields and Ashley Nierman in play production. Nierman was honored in volleyball as well.

The Sutton Mustangs remain perfect on the season after a 73-46 dismantling of the Centura Centurions Thursday night in the Sutton Dome. Paced by a night that would see the Mustangs shoot just over 61 percent from the floor and 60 percent from the foul line. The Mustangs offensive power remains strong, averaging just under 73 points per game, while just as impressive, allowing only 39 points per game on the defensive side.

Three Mustangs would reach double figures in the big win over the Centurions, with Jordan Davis leading the way with 13 points. Garrett Nuss and Cade Wiseman followed with 11, while Kyle Baumert and Jacob Haight hit for nine each in the win.

The young Sandy Creek basketball team faced a weekend of unbeaten teams when the Cougars traveled to Doniphan-Trumbull Friday night to face the 4-0 Cardinals, before returning home to take on the 5-0 Wolverines of Wilber-Clatonia Saturday night in Southern Nebraska Conference play.

The Cardinals used a powerful second half to hold off the pesky Cougars, as after two quarters of play Sandy Creek clinged to a 27-26 lead.

Doniphan-Trumbull, however, opened up the offensive power in the second half, outscoring Sandy Creek 17-7 in the third and 18-6 in the fourth to post the 21-point win over the Cougars, cutting Sandy Creeks record to 1-4.

Junior Wyatt Mach gained 21 of the Cougars 40 points in the loss. Mach was 8-16 from the floor and 1-3 from the foul line, while sinking four threepoint buckets and four more two-point shots.

The Sutton Mustangs continued their dominance on the hardwood during week three, as the Mustangs rolled over both the Eagles of Bruning-Davenport/Shickley on the road, 58-26, and gained a huge 70-42 home win over the Bluehawks of Hastings St. Cecilia, improving to 5-0, while carrying a huge offensive advantage thus far into the season.

Sutton, who outscores opponents by an average of 72.6-38.4, has turned up their play on both ends of the court in its first five games of the season.

A trip to Davenport on Tuesday, Dec. 11, would see the Mustangs outscore the Eagles 31-11 in the first half, before going on a 27-15 second half run to record the 32-point win over the previously unbeaten Eagles.

Junior Jacob Haight led the Mustangs offensively with 12 points, while senior Eli Stengel and sophomore Cade Wiseman hit for nine points each. In all, nine Mustangs hit the scoring column in helping Sutton improve to 4-0.

Corbin Hansen, a 2016 graduate of Sandy Creek High School and a Deweese native, has earned All-American honors for his performance in the NCAA Division II national cross country championships, this past Saturday in Pittsburgh, PA.

Hansen, a junior for the Loper harriers, ran to a 31st place finish, as the lone University of Nebraska-Kearney runner that qualified for the national meet, Dec. 1.

Hansen finished the 10K race (10,000 meters) in a time of 33 minutes, 14.6 seconds. Marcelo Laguera, from Colorado State-Pueblo earned top honors in the men’s race, finishing in a time of 31:46.4.

According to UNK coach Brady Bonsall, “Corbin ran very well at both the regional and national meets. The last four weeks of the season, he was dealing with injuries that limited his training quite a bit. He is a great competitor, though, and was able to perform at a high level at the most important meets.”
