Cougars split games in season-opening triangular

Article Image Alt Text

BY JORDYN HULINSKY

The Lady Cougars of Sandy Creek went 1-1 in the first triangular of the season, hosted at Sandy Creek with Wilber- Clatonia and Heartland.

Sandy Creek defeated Wilber-Clatonia in two sets, 25-16 and 25-15, but then fell to Heartland in two, 25-14 and 28-26.

“That first game the girls stated they were ‘nervous,’” Head Coach Josey VonSpreckelsen said. “It was our first game of the season and we had to get all of our jitters out. The difference between the first game and the second game was intensity. We played somewhat slower in our first game and became more confident and sped up our offense in the second game. The teams we played did very different things so we made adjustments throughout each set and got better each point.”

BY TORY DUNCAN

A 12-point run in the second quarter and a 16-12 second-half run by the visiting Eagles of Southern Valley High School would leave the 2018 Sandy Creek Cougars on the short end of a 28-18 Class C-2 bout Friday, Aug. 24.

The Cougars, after shaking off some early nerves on their third drive of the first quarter, would give Cougar fans a big excitement, when junior defensive back Connor Crumbliss put some thrill in the stands with a 45-yard pick-six interception return to lift Sandy Creek to a 6-0 lead at the 5 minutes, 37 second mark of the opening stanza.

BY TORY DUNCAN

Jack Shadley and Cole Wiseman have a knack of knowing what each other is thinking. So when the opportunity came for the Doane University football standouts to teach and coach together after their college careers ended, they didn’t pass up the chance.

“We never once thought that we’d ever end up at the same school to start our teaching and coaching careers, but I guess, here we are,” Shadley said.

BY JORDYN HULINSKY

The Harvard Cardinals will be attempting to continue the progress made last season, where the team posted the best record since 2010 with their 7-17 finish.

“I expect the girls to have fun and compete each game,” Head Coach Kevin Medrano said. “We are a young team, but we are growing a lot even already this season. We are going to work hard to get out of the slump we’ve been in the past few years and we hope to get better every game.”

Many turnout for Deweese Demo Derby despite heat

Article Image Alt Text

BY ASHLEY D. SWANSON

As the temperatures outside grew hot, so did the dirt track set up for the 41st Deweese Demo Derby Sunday, Aug. 12.

The drivers had a large crowd as they took their positions on the make-shift track, engines running and tires ready to fling dirt.

With the countdown, the sounds of engines flaring up broke loose, with cars slamming into each other, causing dents, popping tires and spilling antifreeze.

In the first heat of the 90s and New Old School, the usual scenery explained above showed as it came down to the top two drivers—Heidi Ploen, of Lemars, IA, and granddaughter of Keith Hansen, and Deweese-resident Jared Brockman.
