People’s Project raises $820 Saturday

Fifty-seven runners and/ or walkers raised $820 for the Harvard’s People’s Project during the Ninth Annual 5K/1-mile run/walk Saturday morning. All entry fees and all donations will go to help those in need in the Harvard area.

Temperatures in the 60s, with clouds and a light southeast wind, made for a great day for participants, although the high humidity was a challenge.

Sutton seniors finish 3rd at districts

The Sutton Mustangs ended their senior baseball season with a 20-6 record and third in the Class C Area 5 District tournament Tuesday evening, after losing to DCB (Dannebrog-Cairo-Boelus). DCB earned an early lead and held on for the eventual 6-0 victory.

Will Reeson was the starting pitcher for the Mustangs. He threw for 5.1 innings, allowing six runs on nine hits while walking four and striking out two. Nathan Drudik threw for the final two-thirds of an inning, where he walked three.

32 shooters compete in 4th Verne Dedrickson Trap Shoot

The Fourth Annual Verne Dedrickson Memorial Trap Shoot was Sunday, July 15, at the Harvard Gun Club, near Harvard. There were 32 shooters in the 50-rock class shoot. BBQ sandwiches were served and prize winners included: Class A, Shane Kissler from Sutton; Class B, Norm Schiffler from Hastings; Class C, Jordan Robbins from Harvard; Class D, Bruce Ramsey from Sutton.

Clay County Fair brings in new event, large crowd during Thursday night’s slate of events

There’s a singular, collective beat before a rodeo begins.

A beat of four hearts; of a horse’s hoof against the ground; a click of the gate as the steer is released into the arena; and before the judge pulls down the red flag, signaling the go.

And then the beat is gone, replaced by the thundering sounds of four horses racing toward the loose steer, a cloud of thin dust being illuminated by the evening sun following behind.

The Sutton juniors ended their season in the district championships as DCB won two games to earn a spot to the state tournament beginning Saturday. DCB won the first game 8-2 and took the second 9-4. 

DCB earned one big inning in the first game to take control of the game in the bottom of the fifth and Sutton was unable to overcome. 

In the second game, DCB earned three innings of three runs for the eventual nine total runs; Sutton scored two in the fourth and one in the sixth and seventh but were stopped on a two out rally when DCB earned a leaping catch to end the inning and the game.

Sutton juniors in Area-6 title game

The Sutton juniors have earned their spot in the championship game of the Class C, Area 6 District tournament hosted in Ravenna after beating the No. 1 and No. 2 seeded teams in the tournament.

In the first game, Friday, against No. 2 DCB (Dannebrog- Cairo-Boelus) Sutton earned the 7-4 victory in a complete seven innings.

Two nights later, Sutton easily defeated the No. 1 seeded team, Ravenna, in five innings, 14-4.

Shaw to compete at National Pitch, Hit & Run

Madison Shaw worked her way through the system of the Pitch, Hit & Run competitions this summer and will make her way to the country’s capital to compete in the National Pitch, Hit & Run Monday, July 16, at National Park in the District of Columbia.

Shaw, daughter of Darren and Megan Shaw of Edgar, began her journey by winning at the local competition hosted in Sutton in April.

Megan Shaw said Madison decided to compete because she enjoys softball and thought she could be successful at these skills.

Ninemire named 2018 National Girls’ Basketball Coach of the Year

SIOUX FALLS, SD — The National High School Athletic Coaches Association is pleased to announce the recipient of the 2018 National Girls’ Basketball Coach of the Year is Russ Ninemire from Sandy Creek High School. The announcement came during the National Coach of the Year Awards Banquet at the National High School Athletic Coaches Association’s national convention at the Ramkota Hotel and Convention Center in Sioux Falls, SD.

The Sutton seniors won three home games this week when they beat Geneva Cornerstone Bank, 10-0, in four and a half innings, Wednesday; Utica, 10-0, in four and a half, Friday; and Gibbon, 6-4, in six and a half innings, Saturday.

Carlson selected for Nebraska–Maine wrestling exchange

Sutton’s Lee Carlson was selected to participate in the Nebraska-Maine wrestling exchange this summer.

“Being a two-time state medalist, Lee is well-respected throughout the state for his actions both on and off the mat, leading to his selection to be a member of this cultural exchange,” Sutton Head Coach Ron Gerber said.

“I am very excited about the opportunity wrestling is offering Lee in furthering his experience with the state of Maine.”
