Lady Cougars End Season at 15-9

A season of streaks would headline the 2015-16 girls basketball season for Sandy Creek, as a 40-28 loss in the C2-7 Sub- District final brought the season to a close for the Lady Cougars with a 15-9 record. After going 1-3 during the first two weeks of the season, with losses to Wood River, Centura and Friend and a 26-10 win over Centennial, Sandy Creek reeled off five straight wins, beating Doniphan-Trumbull and Wilber-Clatonia in regular season action.

Fillmore Central Slips Past Mustangs 54-53 in C2-7 Final

After two losses to the Panthers of Fillmore Central, during the regular season and Southern Nebraska Conference, the Sutton Mustangs had one last chance to knock off the Panthers, following a 54-39 semifinal round loss in the Southern Nebraska Conference tournament back on Feb. 4, and a 54- 41 home loss to the Panthers on Feb. 12.

Mustangs 4th at State Duals

Coming off a huge weekend of success at the 2016 State Wrestling Championships in Omaha, where the Mustang wrestling team placed fifth as a team and earned five state meet medals, including a state championship run from senior Ignacio Rivera, the Sutton crew had one last task at hand this past Saturday with the fourth annual Nebraska State High School State dual Wrestling Championships in Kearney.

FEMA Review, Keno Approval Given

A full slate of action was taken by the Sutton City Council during its regular monthly meeting held Monday, Jan. 11. Council members, following the passage of the monthly consent agenda, where bills and treasurer’s reports were approved, gave the approval of $3,100 to services rendered to JEO Consulting for the Sutton East Ash Street sewer extension project.

Sutton Area COC Annual Meeting Set for Monday, Jan. 18

The Sutton Chamber Annual Meeting has been set for Monday, Jan. 18, at the Sutton Legion. Social hour will run from 6-7 p.m., with a broasted chicken  dinner to follow at 7 p.m. The meal cost $12 per person.

County Board Appoints Nuss Chairman, Reorganizes

Todd Nuss was reappointed as the County Board of Supervisors’ chairman, while Ivan Fintel was also reappointed as the vicechairman of the board, during their Jan. 12, meeting. Board members Fintel, Eric Samuelson, Mike Anderson, Gerald Schmidt, Gary Johnson, Dick Shaw, Nuss and clerk Deb Karnatz approved and appointed various items on their agenda.

Fillies Crush BDS, Centennial

With the much needed win over Centura under their belt, Sutton entertained the once beaten Bruning-Davenport/ Shickley girls Jan. 7, controlling the Lady Eagles to earn a huge 46-27 win. Friday night would send Sutton back into Southern Nebraska Conference play, where the Fillies earned a 27-point, 47-20 win over the Lady Broncos, improving the Fillies to 9-3.

Changing the World

We always ask kids, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Most of the time, it’s a firefighter, police officer, and sometimes a race car driver. What if, instead, we asked kids, “What do you want to change in the world?” This question got me thinking once I had read it.
