by Tory Duncan

It’s been quite a while since I have ranted a bit about sports stuff, but for sometime now, I have have really found myself thinking, “Why in the world is there a three-point shot in the game of basketball?”

Lack of EMTs Major Issue in Rural Areas

No matter the circumstances of the call, all Clay County EMTS are volunteers, just like the fireman. They do not get a paycheck every other week, and yet, they are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week—it’s what they signed up for. In Clay County, there are about 6,500 people living in the 10 towns and surrounding farming ground. Of those 6,500 people, about 70 of them serve in the capacity of EMT. That’s an estimated 94 people per EMT.

Blank Canvas...

by Tory Duncan

Have you ever had one of those mornings where you wake up and you “got nothin’ going on upstairs?” Well, as I sit in front of my computer screen Tuesday morning to pen the Bull, my mind is blank and my eyes are looking at a blank canvas, so to speak. Oh, certainly there was plenty that happened this past week, like the 1991 Sutton girls basketball team being inducted into the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame...like the first of what could be four matches this year between Sutton and Sandy Creek on the volleyball court...

Knowledgeable Kids

by Ashley Swanson

Fire safety is something that is drilled into our heads as kids. We know who to call when there’s a fire. We know to stop, drop and roll if we’re on fire. We know that we should run for the street if our house catches on fire. We know not to leave a candle burning if we leave the house. But when it was time for the firefighters to teach us these things, often times we were more interested in the cool gadgets they brought with them and couldn’t wait to get our grimy fingerprints all over them.

JENNY’S REESources

by Jenny Rees

Stalk Rot: Harvest is progressing and we were anticipating a higher amount of stalk rot this year. This is because increased disease pressure on the leaves of corn plants reduces the phytosynthetic capability of those leaves. We’ve had a great fill period for corn and plants started taking material from the stalks to fill those ears. You can check your fields for stalk rot by walking into the field and pinching (placing the first internode of the stalk above the soil line between your thumb and first finger and applying pres - sure to) 20 plants. Take a percentage of those that crush in your hand.

Mustangs Hold off D-T 16-13

Article Image Alt Text
The Sutton Mustangs, coming off their opening C2-7 District win over Sandy Creek Sept. 25, would see another big challenge entering the Sutton sports complex this past Friday, as the once beaten Doniphan-Trumbull Cardinals would do battle with the Mustangs. Two contrasting styles of offense, with Sutton’s “punch you in the mouth” running game and D-T’s hurry up shotgun style offense, made for an interesting night for players and fans alike.
