Oh my how 10 years have flown by

By Tory Duncan

Sometimes time can drag on, and yes, I’ll admit that over the past 10 years since beginning with the Clay County News, it has! But...as I began a reflective past couple of weeks, a lot has changed in my life over the these 10 years with this newspaper.

I decided to take a little deeper look, thanks to an online calendar calculator. It’s kind of eye opening when you take a look like this. There have been 523 weeks worked since I walked into the front door of the news office on June 1, 2009. That equates out to 3,654 days and 87,696 hours, which means this rendition of the Bull is the 523rd in my career at the Clay County News.

Some have been good, some have been emotional, some have been goofy and yet some have seemingly been just so-so, if that!

Students rate SC high in belonging, culture

BY RITA BRHEL

Sandy Creek’s students think very highly of their school in some ways, while other aspects present opportunities for improvement.

SC secondary principal Jason Searle presented the results of the online YouthTruth survey during the South Central Unified School District #5’s Board of Education regular meeting on May 20, at Lawrence-Nelson High School in Nelson.

YouthTruth is a tool that schools can use to aid in needs assessment and strategic planning. All SC middle and high school students completed the survey earlier this year, rating the school in the areas of academic rigor, belonging and peer collaboration, college and career readiness, culture, engagement, and relationships.

BY ASHLEY D. SWANSON

Since 1949, Sutton has had a grocery store located at the corner of Saunders Avenue and West Grove Street, first belonging to Forrest and Verna Brown, before being passed down to their sons Mark and Alan in 2007.

In 2012, when Alan passed away, Mark became the sole owner, running the store alongside his wife, JoAnn.

Today, the store is well known and heavily used by Suttonites and area communities, and on July 1, the changing of owners will once again take place.

Flooding issues hamper Clay County

Article Image Alt Text

School Creek flowed across Highway 6 west of Sutton Monday causing the Nebraska Department of Roads to close the highway from Sutton to Highway 14 northbound to Aurora until the flood waters recede.

MELISSAWHITEFOOT | CLAY COUNTY NEWS

Water flows over a gravel road east of Fairfield Monday morning. Flooding was prevalent throughout the county, shutting down several roads.

A strong weather system hit all of Clay County Sunday evening through early Monday morning, making the Memorial Day events and services a messy situation. Fairfield and Harvard services were forced to be held indoors, as many areas of the county, according to the website NeRain, had over three inches of rainfall cover hundreds of acres of farmland in many reaches of the county.

As of early Monday afternoon, the Little Blue River in southern Clay County was flowing out of its banks, while along Highway 6, water from School Creek flowed over the road, forcing the Nebraska Department of Roads to close a section of the highway from Highway 14 north to Aurora to the western edge of Sutton.

Co. Board, sheriff consider wages for deputies

Article Image Alt Text

The Clay County Board of Supervisors likes the direction that the Clay County Sheriff’s department is going—the county now has a full slate of eight deputiesand the board wants to keep it that way.

With an ongoing national shortage in law enforcement officers, especially in rural areas, wages are a key way for Clay County to stay competitive in the job market, as well as retain the deputies currently on force.

Sheriff Jeff Franklin gave a wage comparison with area police forces during the board’s regular meeting on May 21 at the courthouse in Clay Center.
