Alzheimer’s: Putting a face to the disease

John Gustafson is one of those people you would never forget. His charismatic aura filters through his home at the Sutton Community Home, and his laugh has been known to echo throughout the halls.

Gustafson has always been this way, according to his wife, Jeanne. Despite a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s a couple of years ago, Gustafson continues to have happy days, staying as talkative as ever.

SPS Board talks to new architect, discusses 2018 projects

Jon Carlson, with Carlson West Povodra Architects, talked to the Sutton School Board about what they do as architects for schools wanting to do improvements.

His firm approaches the process by doing an existing facility analysis, identifying the school’s needs, giving a priorities assessment and looking at additional services, and then finally presenting a budget.

NCAPS Center taking shape for SCNUD

South Central Unified construction project showing signs of new center

Construction continues to show great strides on the new Nebraska Center for Advanced Professional Studies (NCAPS) center at Sandy Creek Public Schools’ main campus along Highway 14 in Clay County.

According to information on the website of the architectural firm that designed the NCAPS center for the South Central Nebraska Unified School District (SCNUD), the new center will offer 40,000 square feet of coactive and flexible educational environments to support the school’s linked-learning curriculum, while providing students with key moments of engagement with peers and teachers.

Harvard defeats Cody-Kilgore to earn a spot in the state finals game

The Harvard Cardinals avenged a 2016 semi-final loss to the Cody-Kilgore Cowboy’s Friday by a 25-point margin, a check off the season goals’ list.

“Enjoy this win, until we get home, we aren’t done yet,” a few comments overheard at the team huddle following the 56-31 win against the Cowboys.

Cornstalk grazing tips, options with excessive amounts of grain in the field

Excessive grain left in the field due to downed corn and ear drop is leaving producers with questions regarding grazing cornstalks. This is an issue that needs to be addressed accurately and timely in order to have success in the coming months.

An eight-inch ear of corn contains about 0.50 lb equivalent of shelled corn grain; therefore, 112 eight-inch ears would equal 1 bushel (1 bushel = 56 pounds). By counting the number of ears, the amount of corn can be estimated. If corn is planted in 30-inch rows, count the total number of ears in three different 100-foot furrow strips and divide by two to give an approximate number of bushels per acre. See table below.
