Alzheimer’s: The Quiet Disease

Article Image Alt Text

BY ASHLEY D. SWANSON

**Editor’s Note: This is the first of a five-part series recognizing Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. The series will highlight what Alzheimer’s is and how it effects a person. Along with a real account of a person affected by Alzheimer’s, information will also be given by a neurologist in Hastings and the staff and administration at the Sutton Community Home.**

It begins small: Forgetting keys. Not being able to put a name to a face. Then it begins to grow: Forgetting directions to a familiar area. Forgetting to get dressed. Not knowing what day it is or even the month. Then it consumes: Not recognizing your family and friends. Never being able to remember someone new. Forgetting parts about your own life.

Harvard holds off late Deshler rally for 52-46 win to reach six-man semi-final round for second straight year

BY TORY DUNCAN

A feeling of being a bit too amped up came across the mind of Harvard Head Football Coach Scott Trimble Friday night, as his Cardinal football team held off a talented Deshler Dragon football team in the opening round of the 2017 six-man state playoffs. Harvard stopped a late fourth-quarter Dragon rally to improve to 9-0 on the year, with a 52-46 win.

“Our kids knew going in what was at stake, they knew that if we get the win over Deshler we get a rematch with Cody-Kilgore because Cody had already beaten Walthill (50-6) earlier in the day. I think we were a bit too amped up,” Trimble said.

November is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month

By Ashley D. Swanson

Alzheimer’s. While I personally have not faced this disease, nor have I ever had a family member go through the diagnosis, I’ve met many people who have.

When I was a CNA at the Blue Valley Lutheran Care Home, you either worked the north and east sides or the south side—meaning you were assigned to help residents on those halls.

Sometimes, you were assigned to help in the far east wing, which was where the Alzheimer’s patients resided.

The signs that you’re getting old? Nah!!

By Tory Duncan

Age is a funny thing, as you go through life each day comes and goes. You work hard, find some down time and try to catch a breather at the end of each day.

Last week, my “baby sister” Tonya surfaced a relic from the past, nearly 35 years ago, and shared it on Facebook.

My father, in the summer of 1983, the summer after I graduated high school in Shelton, kept getting calls from CBS News (yes, the national office) trying to schedule a time for Charles Kuralt to come out and do a story on Doug Duncan, Publisher of the Shelton Clipper.

SIGNS OF fall

Article Image Alt Text

Chilly temperatures in the morning and warmer, T-shirt weather by the afternoon—fall is officially here. Not only has the weather begun the usual switch between cool and warm, the leaves have turned and started to fall, harvest is in full swing, and pumpkins are adorning porch steps.
