Arthur C. "Art" Nicolai

Arthur C. "Art" Nicolai, Ed.D., age 88, of Sutton and Lincoln, passed away peacefully on the night of June 9, 2015. Art was surrounded and comforted by his family in Lincoln at the time of his passing. Art Nicolai was born in
The Sutton Hospital at 901 S. Saunders Ave., January 12, 1927, the third son of Fred and Martha (Heinz) Nicolai. He was raised in the John and Emma Gray Historic Home, currently part of the Sutton Nebraska Museum,  urchased by Art's father, Fred Nicolai Jr., from Emma J. Gray in Sept. 1925. Art lived there until Dec. 1944, when he joined the Navy. Art was an avid supporter of athletics, participating in  football, basketball and track at

SHIRLEY M. WOODARD-WHITE

Sutton resident, Shirley Mae Woodard-White, 83, passed away Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at Mary Lanning Healthcare in Hastings, NE.Funeral services were 2 p.m., Monday, June 1, 2015, at Hope Reformed Church in Sutton, NE, with Rev. Darrell Kingswood officiating. Interment followed at the Sutton Cemetery.  Visitation was Sunday, from 1–8 p.m., at Sutton Memorial Chapel in Sutton, NE.Memorial contributions may be directed to the family to be designated later.Condolences may be left at www.suttonmemorial.com.Shirley was born on July 18, 1931, to Adam D. and Henrietta F. (Griess) Bauer. She received her education in Sutton and graduated from Sutton High School in 1949. She married Leo Woodard in York, NE, and to this union, two children were born. Leo passed away August 12, 1965. Later, she married Tom White in Raton, NM, and to this union one son was born.

GLENDA L. BELL

Harvard resident, Glenda L. Bell, 62, passed away Friday, May 29, 2015, at Perkins Pavilion, Good Samaritan Society, Hastings-Village. Memorial services were Wednesday, June 3, 2015, at 10 a.m., at the Harvard United Methodist Church, Harvard, with Pastor Chad Cassel and Pastor Travis King officiating. There will be no visitation, as Glenda’s wishes were to be cremated. Burial will be at a later date. Apfel Funeral Home, Harvard, is in charge of the arrangements.

Glenda was born Dec. 21, 1952, to Kermit and Anna (Rothfuss) Gundersen in Hastings. She graduated from Adams Central High School, Hastings. DIXIE L. WILKERSON

Dixie Lee Wilkerson, 69, of Clay Center, died Sunday, May 24, at CHI Health St. Francis in Grand Island. A celebration of life service will be Thursday, at 10:30 a.m., at Clay Center Christian Church, with the Rev. Nathan Brands officiating. Dixie selflessly donated her body to be used to train future medical professionals. Memorial sare suggested to the family. She was born April 28, 1946, in Red Cloud, NE, to Ezra and Frieda (Spooner) Figgins. She attended Red Cloud
Elementary School and the First Church of Christ. Growing up in an extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins was the highlight of her formative years. She especially enjoyed her time with Aunt Edna and Uncle Harvey Fogo on the farm
near Burr Oak, KA, with cousins Peggy, Glenny and Cheryl. At age 12, Dixie moved with her family to Arizona, where she graduated from Antelope Union High School in 1964. She sang alto in choir, participated in FHA and made lifelong

MARJORIE H. YOST

Long time Sutton resident Marjorie Yost, passed away peacefully in Alpharetta, GA, April 29, just days after her 98th birthday. Born and raised in Washington, K S , Marjorie met and married Mert (Snort) Yost i n 1938  . The ir wedding ceremony was certainly one of the most unique in matrimonial history , as immediately after the ceremony, Marjorie headed for the operating table for an emergency appendectomy. After several job-related moves in Nebraska, the couple returned to Sutton, where Mert took over the Ford dealership from his father, C.G. (Coony) Yost. Ever a firm believer in education, at 43, Marjorie returned to school at Hastings College, graduating with a degree in Education in 1963, subsequently teaching English  literature at Sutton and Henderson High Schools.She took great pride in her development of a curriculum  that included such “heavy reading” as Milton’s “Paradise Lost”, Walden and many  Shakespearian plays.

DOROTHY I. SHAW

Dorothy I. Shaw, the daughter of Rasmus and Elna (Hansen) Andersen, was born October 11, 1925, near Sutton, NE. She departed this lifeon Sunday, May 17, 2015, at the Harvard Rest Haven in Harvard, NE, at the age of 89 years. Dorothy attended rural schools and graduated from Edgar High School with the class of 1942, and furthered her education at Hastings College. On April 6, 1946, Dorothy was united in marriage to Harold Shaw of Portsmouth, Ohio, and the couple lived on a farm in the Edgar area. Dorothy had taught country school for 16 years in Clay and Nuckolls Counties. She taught sixth grade in Fairfield for five years and 17 years in Special Education ESU #9 in Hastings. Dorothy enjoyed country music and was a member of the Nebraska Country Music Foundation since 1988. She enjoyed writing songs and received many awards in Nashville. One song, “Rose in His Hands”, was written on behalf of her father and she received gold and platinum records from KMA records in Nashville.

BERNADINE E. BAKER

Bernadine E. Baker of Leawood, KS, died May 5, 2015, at home with her son ather side. She was  born October 19,1924, in Sutton, NE, the daughter of Edward and Louise Nuss Ebert. She was married to Robert F. Baker, who preceded her in death, December 29, 1984. She was also preceded in death by George F. DeMond on April 22, 1995; sister Helen Brogden of  Memphis, TN; and brother, Mervin Ebert of Sutton, NE. “Berny” was a member of the Broadway United Methodist Church, a past member of the Cortland Memorial Hospital Auxi l iary, V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, Women of the Moose,  Chapter 72, Cortland, NY. She was employed by the Cortland County Sheriff’s Department for 32 years, retiring in 1980. She continued part-time employment for the Loyal Order of Moose for 10 years, retiring in 1993. Berny is survived  y a son, Gregory F.DeMond, and wife, Martha, of Leawood, KS, two grandchildren; Lynn A. (husband To d d ) B a c hma n o f Harriso n v i l le,MO; and Marcus  R.
